Named by MovieMaker Magazine as one of the “25 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” the Black Maria Film and Video Festival once again launches at New Jersey City University on Friday, February 4, 2011. The festival is known as an international juried competition and award tour of works from independent film and video makers.
The festival will be held at the Newark Museum the following day from 2-5pm. The event is free with suggested museum admission.
Last year, I attended the festival’s opening night at New Jersey City University and I fell in love with Joaquin Baldwin’s animated film, Sebastian’s Voodoo. The film is about a voodoo doll who decides to fight back against a cruel master.
The festival will be held in venues across the country and internationally as well.
In October, The Black Maria Film + Video Festival’s 1st DVD was released featuring some of the best work from the past decade.

MATTB and His Fight for His Life Against Cancer
Posted: November 12, 2010 in PressTags: Leiomyo Sarcoma, MattB
MattB, a former teacher and guitarist for Slackjaw Jezebel is currently battling Stage IV Leiomyo Sarcoma. He is currently unable to work due to his illness and his bills are piling up.
I met MattB years ago and he is one of the most nicest people I have ever met (and I am not just saying that because he dated my cousin!). Despite beating cancer as an infant which robbed him of his eyesight, Matt has lived a very independent life without relying on others and plays the guitar beautifully.
But now he needs all of us to support him whether it is financially, emotionally or physically. Please help by either sharing this post with everyone you know or by checking out their blog or fundraiser page. If you are on Facebook you can join the Mattb Vs. Cancer fan page and share this with your peeps! With the help of his friends, family and donors, they have already raise $8,000! So please spread the word!

Earlier this year I attended the 29th Annual Black Maria Film Festival, which was named after Thomas Edison’s 1893 motion picture studio. His studio was the first motion picture studio in the world. The festival is known as an international juried competition and award tour of works from independent film and video makers.
One short film stood out from the rest: Joaquin Baldwin’s animated film, Sebastian’s Voodoo (2008). The film is about a voodoo doll who decides to take action against his master, who causes suffering among the dolls.
